Thanks for posting a link to this article.
I write a lot on expansion of the use of
the jury system in my blog and have linked
to the article there with a reference to it.

That being said, would an alternative to
the challenges be larger juries
where cosanguinity or a juror with a
biassed attitude would be overwhelmed by
sheer numbers, as the Athenians did.

Yes, I think both size and unanimity requirements could be impacted by the removal of peremptory challenges.
